In 2015, Construction workers unearthed 43 fossilized dinosaur eggs during road repair work in Heyuan city in China. There have been many historic disasters in Asia including protests, battles, and wars. One of the worst wars was the Mongol invasions throughout the 13th century. Natural historic disasters include earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, monsoon floods, typhoons, sandstorms, and droughts. The worst natural disaster was a serious famine in northern China during the years of 1876-79 when over 9,000,000 people perished.

Meteorites have been found throughout Asia including many in the deserts of Oman. The last really big meteor landed in Siberia a hundred years ago and the most recent landed in Asia in 2004. Many impact craters have been confirmed in Asia that were caused by the collision of large meteorites or comets with the Earth. One of the largest meteorites ever recorded has been discovered in the remote Altai mountains that separate China from Mongolia. In 1938 a 1,000 year old Buddhist Statue was found in Tibet that had been carved from a meteorite.
Asia is surrounded on three sides by OCEANS. The Pacific Ocean is to the east, the Arctic Ocean is to the north, and the Indian Ocean is to the south. There have been many shipwrecks in the oceans around Asia and inland on the continent.

The Inland waterways provide transportation in some countries. Saudi Arabia has some unique highways including the longest straight road in the world - Highway 85.
The United Nations Educational and Cultural Organization UNESCO protects natural and cultural properties around the world. Asia has many UNESCO World Heritage Sites. China ranks 3rd in the world for number of UNESCO sites. The Temple Complex of Angkor Wat in Cambodia is a UNESCO site and has become a symbol of the country and is on its national flag. Halong Bay in Vietnam has thousands of islands and is a UNESCO site. Another site is Merv in Turkmenistan which was a major oasis-city in Central Asia on the historical Silk Road. As many as 6 sites in Asia were added the UNESCO in 2017 including the historical city of Yazd, the Hebron/Al-Khalil Old Town in Palestine, and the Archaeological Site of Aphrodisia in Turkey. The continent also has UNESCO Biosphere Reserves.

VIETNAM - Capital Hanoi. This country is in Southeast Asia. Special attractions include temples, monuments, pagodas, palaces, and sites dating back to the 2nd century. VOLCANOES are located throughout Asia especially Northern Asia and Southeast Asia. Japan has many active and extinct volcanoes. The Krakatoa Volcano in Indonesia and Mt. Fuji Volcanoin Japan are Natural Wonders of the World. Indonesia has the most active volcanoes in the world. The eruption of Mount Tambora in 1815 was one of the most powerful eruptions in recorded history. In 2002Papandayan Volca (Indonesia) erupted and in 2015Mount Raung (Indonesia) erupted. The Toba supereruption (Indonsia) was a supervolcanic eruption that occurred about 75,000 years ago and is one of the Earth's largest known eruptions. In 2015, Toba supervolcano raised fears of a major eruption after 75,000 years. In 2016 2015Rinjani (Indonesia) erupted. The Mayon Volcano in the Phillippines began erupting again in January 2018. Klyuchevskoy in Russia is the highest active volcano in Asia. The East Coast of Asia is part of The Ring of Fire.
The WEATHER in Asia is moist across southeast sections and dry across much of the interior. Some of the largest daily temperature ranges on Earth occur in western sections of Asia. The monsoon circulation dominates across southern and eastern sections. Southwestern sections of the continent are hot. The climate of Siberia varies drastically and it is one of the coldest places in the Northern Hemisphere. The most active place on earth for tropical cyclone activity lies northeast of the Philippines and south of Japan. In August 2017, Heavy monsoons occurred in India, Bangladesh and Nepal resulting in heavy flooding. In December 2017, a fierce typhoon lashed the Philippines killing more than 200 and leaving about 70,000 homeless.
